MURAL FAQ’s

magpie detail

Q: Number 1 Question: How much does a mural cost?

A: This is the hardest question to answer. It depends not only on size and location, but also detail of the subject matter. An intricate small mural could cost more than a larger, simpler mural. Ceiling average 50% more than walls. My murals start at $16 per sq. ft. to $100 for a highly detailed trompe l’oeil mural. Did that help? Give me a call, I’m really good at working with your budget.

Q: What type of paint do you use?

A: Whew! Easy question. Golden Acrylics fine art paints. These are the best acrylics out there in my opinion. I use only colors with a high color fastness rating.

Q: I would really like a mural, but I might move someday.

A: I know, not really a question. Your mural doesn’t need to be painted on the wall. Very often it’s possible for me to paint on hardboard or canvas, so the mural would be installed. If needed, you can take it with you.

Q: Does the client need to come up with an idea?

A: This is great when it happens, but if you’re blank, I’ll sit down with you and pick your brain about favorite colors, places, activities, etc. I’ll find out what you like and what you don’t. Don’t worry, there’s always an idea or several, lurking out there.

Q: How do I get started? What’s the process?

A: First call for an in home consultation. We’ll talk and maybe come up with a few ideas and discuss pricing, etc. I’ll come back after I draw a small sketch or two, scaled to your space. In this meeting, I can note any changes you would like and on your approval of the sketch, we move on. At this stage I create a small scale painting of the sketch. Again any color changes are made at this stage, rather than on the wall. It’s way easier. When you approve of the small painting, it’s time to schedule your mural.

Q: How are payments worked out?

A: I ask for 25% down after the sketch is approved, before I start the small painting. Halfway through I’ll need another 25%. The balance is due immediately upon completion.
